Evaluation Question Four

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Stage 1 - Research

During the beginning stage of planning for the film we used google blogger to create a blog so that we, as a group, we could access each others work. It allowed us to post ideas for a storyline and then, when the time came, plan and construct our final storyline. It allowed us to keep all our work together, online so that there wasn't a chance of loosing any work and all unfinished drafts could be safely kept on Blogger.

Throughout the planning process I used IMDB to regularly research films that could be used as inspiration. I researched films to look at narrative, genre, film posters and other aspects that I needed to study in order to create a narrative and genre perfect film.

Prezi was used as a format for creating interesting, non essay looking, posts. I used it as a way for presenting posts because there was a chance that just worded blogger posts could have become boring to read and to keep seeing. Prezi was used last year so it wasn't difficult to use.

Celtx was the software used to create the script for the film. We had no trouble using it due to using this equipment last year. It's an easy way to create a simple, easy to read, script.

Stage 2 - Planning

We used the Sony HD 2000 camera and connecting tripod last year so there wasn't any problems in using this. The only problem occurred when we had to take the filmed footage from the tape in the camera to putting onto the software on the Apple Mac. The tapes seemed corrupted and the footage we had filmed just wasn't there so it caused us to be behind in the editing process. This didn't effect us a group though and we just scheduled a re-shoot.

The editing software we used is called Final Cut Express. It allowed us to cut and move clips to where we needed them in the film. Using the software was easy due to us using the software easily last year too! It let us create a professional looking film that we could happily submit as our final film.

The phone we used to photograph the shooting photos was this Samsung Galaxy S3. We used it because it was in my pocket and it was easy to get out and photograph the process of filming.

Stage 3 - Evaluation

YouTube was vital for the distribution of our film in that it allowed us to share the film freely. The film was easily accessible in that, whenever we wanted to see our film or show it to others we could easily access it. YouTube allowed us to also share our film on other social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram.

PowerPoint was a format used to create presentations in the evaluation process. It's an easy application to use and as I have used it since secondary school, the process of making one didn't need to be taught.

Facebook was an easy way to attract potential audiences as most people have a Facebook account. Using Facebook I could ask friends and family to watch our film, linked on YouTube, and fill in a feedback questionnaire on Google Docs. Social networking is very easy to use and because I use it as a personal account it wasn't difficult to use. On Facebook I also created a fan page in that people can watch trailers and check out the film poster etc. It's a way to attract audiences. Here you can see the Facebook page.

Problems
As a group we didn't encounter many problems due to studying Media for two years now. All of the equipment we used last year so we knew what to do and what to not do. The only problem we did encounter, as i have said, is loosing footage because of faulty video tapes. Using a variety of different equipment and applications I have stretched the complexity at which I can use these applications and because of that, I am glad that we used such a broad variety of different products in order to research, plan and evaluate.
