Location Shots - Train Station

Location Shots - Train Station

The corresponding scene after the title sequence where we have established the character of Kyle and his overall situation we will move on the scene where he gets off of a train on the platform.
In this scene is where we first show The Client, not his face, but the back of his head. To keep the anonymity we are deciding to not show The Client's face until the last scene in the movie when it is revealed through the flashback.
The platform has properties to it that we need to include for the first scene in the film. The long platform means that we have plenty of space to film in and because the setting itself has moderate levels of danger we need to make sure that we have enough space for equipment and also for the cast and crew to make sure we can space out but not to a dangerous limit.

Another element to the platform that we like is that the 2 barriers, one higher than the other, would be a good substitute to the bridge that we were initially going to use in this scene.
It would be a lot easier to film on as it would be easier to do the split focus shots between The Client and Kyle as the shot would be clearer as the walls around bridge that we were going to use are quite high and the actor playing The Client is small and we would struggle to do the shot that we want, especially since we aren't sure if the camera would reach the height that we would like it to.

The barriers that the train station has would be an ideal substitute instead of the bridge as they can give the same effect that we would like to create with this scene of that close/distance barrier between Kyle and The Client. We would like to create this effect as we feel that it would be beneficial to the genre as it would add that tense atmosphere as this is the first scene where The Client is introduced and you never actually get to see his face which aids the anonymity we would like to create with the character of The Client before we reveal him towards the end.
The barriers are also a lot closer together which we thought could cause a problem as it might not create the same tone to this scene because it isn't from a clear distance which would make the scene eerier. Although we thought about it on the other hand and the fact that the barriers aren't that far away from each other could also be beneficial to the mood in the scene as it is quite unsettling to know that there is someone so close to you, watching you and you wouldn't even realise. To have this happen in quite a rural and normal atmosphere could also create that intense, thrilling and almost disturbing atmosphere as this is a location which many of us, and hopefully the audience, are familiar with. This could overall make the scene a lot more relatable and overall create a more thrilling atmopsphere.

This was done in the psychological horror 'The Strangers'. Although this film is a horror as opposed to a thriller, it still has qualities for this scene that we can definitely incorporate into this scene. This atmosphere was particularly effective in this certain scene of The Strangers that also ended up being used as one of the version of the film's posters.
This scene was particularly effective as the fact that this complete masked stranger is in her home, a place where you should keep the safest almost radiates disturbance and broke the barrier between what is known as comfortable to an audience. This scene also came under scrutiny with the public when people asked the question 'Why didn't she turn around?' which almost questionned the film's feability as legitimately 'scary'. Although when a random post turned up on a blogger website answered everyone's question, the feel seemed as eerie and as disturbing again.

Social Networking Viral Marketing - Divergent

Viral Marketing - Social Networking

I know that Divergent isn't the same genre as the film we are creating but the official Facebook page is a really good example of a successful social network advertisement.

This is a great example of viral networking!
  • The cover photo exhibits the main characters in the film; this could possibly be the film poster. The cover photo says 'In Cinemas Friday' which tells any potential audiences that it is cinema's on the coming Friday. It allows them to decide whether they'd like to see it Friday and it is subconsciously asking them 'What are you doing Friday? Nothing? Come and watch Divergent then!'
  • Under the 'Divergent Movie' title anyone looking at the page are told that the page has 1'633,807 likes! Which tells them that this film is going to be hugely popular.
  • The description tells the audience that this book is based on a novel by Veronica Roth. The audience will then, if they watch the film and enjoy it, and haven't already read the book, will go and read the book which again, builds a bigger fan base. There is more than one novel as it is a trilogy. If this film is successful, the books will become more popular and so will the films.
  • The options to click on are: Photos, Find Times, Videos and there is an option for a quiz. The quiz tells you which Divergent character you are.
  • I think the 'FIND TIMES' options is brilliant because it allows potential audiences to see if the film is being shown near them. The picture on the option gives the potential audience a chance to actually buy their tickets from the webpage.
  • The photo's and video's option is good because fans and potential audiences can see what is to come in this feature film!

Up to 10 days before the film comes out the Divergent Movie page posted screenshots from the film with '?? days to go!' which allowed audiences to know how long they have to wait before the big release! It also gives a little insight of what is come due to the screen shots.

Analysis of a Relevant Short Film

Analysis of a Relevant Short Film

This is a film called 'One More Time' that I found whilst searching for inspiring short films on YouTube. I instantly liked it so I decided to analyse it and see what aspects and devices of media they have used in this short film.

The first shot in the title sequence is a tracking shot of someone running fast and the mise en scene suggests that this character has had something bad happen to them or has done something bad themselves. The shirt is spotted with blood and what looks like a slipping hand print. At this point in the film this person could either be running from someone or running for someone so it is an ambiguous shot that suggests more than one situation.

After the previous shot there is a title page with a name on it. Because the before shot is what it is, this title page is an anti climax and it is used to create a suspenseful atmosphere. The name 'Genevieve Howell' is confusing because it isn't clear who she is. Is this person one of the female actors? The director? Screen writer? It isn't clear therefor in my film I shall make sure that the title sequence is clear and easy to understand.

A close up is used to show that this person is carrying a knife. Suggesting that he has done something terrible as it is covered in blood. The close up shows that the mess on the knife is red which can only be assumed is blood.

This close up shows the mans face screwed up like he is trying to repress a memory or a bad thought. His face could also be scrunched because he is in some form of pain that is nearly causing him to scream out. It is clear that his face is cut and seems to be bleeding heavily. The audience, again, will be confused about what purpose this shot is used for and why the character is doing this.

This is the title shot so that the audience know the title of the film. 'One More Time' could suggest that the killer wants one more kill but as it shows. It's his 'girlfriend' who wants to kiss one more time which isn't something the audience would have expected. The black writing is contrasted against the black background which could have negative connotations. There is more black, which symbolise darkness, unhappiness and being scared, in comparison to the small surface area of the colour white which symbolises light and purity. It shows how the bad has control over the goodness in this film.

Using these type of shots suggests that something bad has happened and it gives the audience clues as to what is happening in the film. This particular one suggests that someone, in relation to the main character in this film, is missing. Whether that be a family member, friend or a complete stranger is unknown but it can be assumed that it is a friend or a stranger. There are other shots of missing girls to support this.

This is a medium close up shot to show that this character is panicked and in a room of, what looks like, newspaper and magazine cutting outs. This creates a sinister atmosphere. The female character is off centre which suggests that this situation isn't quite right. The tape over her mouth, to stop her making noise, suggests this. The extremely low ceiling light creates a weird looking room. Her face looks pained and she looks confused, probably because she's in a room that she hasn't seen before.

This is a close up of a knife very nearly entering someone's eye. An arm is clearly holding her head so it can't be pulled away. It seems to be the arm of the shirt previously featured in the film. A close up shot is used to show how close the knife came to her eye/face.

This medium shot shows the two characters embracing in some form of awkward stance. He is holding her face awkwardly and she seems to be trying to push his hand away with her head. He is lower than her which suggests that he is giving in to whatever is happening. The shot allows the audience to see that both the characters are involved in this situation.

This pink/red effect that has been out on the film suggests some kind of flashback. The image looks contorted and blurred like the memory has been repressed in some way or that the memory hasn't been thought about enough to be understood. The character has been blacked out so that the focus is on the thing on his arm. The audience need to see that, that is what he is talking about in the voice over.

This last shot shows how the character has gone from being sympathetic towards the female to a high angle shot which gives him the power in the situation. He then does put the knife in her eye but the screen cuts to black.

Research into Viral Advertisement

For our film to reach the audiences we target, we need to create a form of viral advertisement.

When looking at viral advertisement I have come across massive amounts all created to target audiences in different ways. For example for Batman The Dark Knight in which we studied for our AS, we looked at how a newspaper was created called 'The Gotham Times' in which articles were published each week to waiting fans. A low profile website was also created showing random members of the public coated in a layer of white face powder. This was a hint at the joker from Batman.

Another viral campaign I looked into was the 'Dove Campaign for Real Beauty', which is slightly off topic as it is not a horror film, however the basic principles of the effect it has on an audience stay the same. Click Here to watch the link.

The final form of viral advertisement I researched was 'Carrie' the 2013 American thriller. I found this viral ad most interesting. The way powers are used to shock strangers in a local coffee shop allows them to feel shocked, and most importantly what they are observing is real. This is the exact effect that film want to achieve when in the cinema, and so this is why this is one of the most effective forms of Viral Advertisement I have ever whitened.

The Client's Final Outfit Decision

The Client's Final Outfit Decision
This is The Client's final outfit decision. We decided that it be best if The Client was to wear a black shirt because the colour black has negative connotations such as death and the darkness and because The Client is the bad dark presense in the film it would be best if he looked dark and didn't portray someone who emits any kind of lightness and goodness. The shirt is wore open slightly at the top instead of being fastened tightly because having it fastened tightly is assosiated with trying too hard or looking smart for an interview but The Client is at the top of his game. He doesn't need to try because he's already prepared for whatever his 'work' throws at him.

Coupled with the black shirt The Client is wearing a black smart suit jacket that is completely black with no specific detail. This is to show that The Client doesn't need to impress anyone with a fancy 'show off' suit.

The Client's hair is cool and messy to again show that he doesn't need to impress anyone. He is freshly shaven and looks poised and presented as he is a boss of an illegal company. He needs to have authority.

To match the suit The Client is wearing black trousers with black shiny shoes.

Kyle's Final Outfit Decision

Kyle's Final Costume
This is Kyle's final outfit. He is wearing a green flannel shirt that is a dark green colour with a dirty yellow check on it. The shirt is creased and loose fitting to show that Kyle isn't the type of person to go out and buy clothes for himself. Coupled with the shirt, Kyle is wearing an old looking cardigan that looks worn and slightly frayed to show that Kyle, again, isn't bothered my looks and appearence. He is wearing old trainers and matching blue working trousers that are bobbled and worn. His whole look looks messy and unco-oridinated to suggest that Kyle doesn't care and won't care untill he has a life worth getting up and ready for. As of now, his life isn't worth making the effort for.

Kyle's hair is unruly and cut in a hairstyle that could suggest that Kyle cut it himself due to not having any money to do it himself. His eyes are dark and show that Kyle isn't having the best of a nights sleep.

Analysis of Questionnaire Results

After publishing our questionnaire over our personal FaceBook accounts and pages, we collected a total of 11 detailed responses which I shall analyse during this short essay.

Q1- What genre do you think our film is?
A - Psychological Crime Thriller

Here are the responses converted into a pie chart.
The chart reveals that the majority of our answers thought
that our film was a Psychological Thriller. Although this is
not the word perfect result we were hoping for, it is clear
that our overall genre is recognised which proves our
storyline to be understandable. Note how the majority
of the people who answered out questionnaire were
complete novices to film categorisation, and so helps to
explain our answers. The correct answer ranked third.

Q2 - Do our characters seem appropriate for the genre?
A - optional; Yes or No
Here are the responses converted into a pie chart.
Here 100% of answers confirmed that our character profiles
we had created fit our target genre. This is clarification
for us now to finish our character profiles. Minor
adjustments shall be made in order to slightly improve on
our characters image.

Q3 - What BBFC rating would you give this film?

 A - 15

Here are the results.

Again like the previous answer all our results showed
that they all thought out film should be a 15 certificete.
This is very promising news for out group and we can
now go ahead and start the filming process.

Q - What is your age?

As shown by this pie chart, it is clear our audience have a
range of ages, with the most common being our age; 17. We
expected this as we handed out questionnaires to our
classmates.

Q - What age group do you think our film is targeted at?
A - 15-30
This result shows that our target audience, as we thought
are from the age range of 15-30. This pie chart clearly
reflects this. Other options chosen were 15-40 and 15-20,
both of these fit our age range for our target audience, just
not as precise as the overall result we received.

Q - Where would you expect to see this film?
A -

We then asked our reviewers to leave a general comment on
our films story line. Here are some on the answers we received.

Kyle's Costume Decision: Update

Costume Update
Even though Kyle is a tramp we all decided that he would still have some belongings to his name; He wouldn't just have clothes on his back. So we came to the conclusion that Kyle should carry a rucksack. The contents of the rucksack are unknown and will remain unknown throughout the film. The bag is a named brand 'adidas' and we decided that if he was to have a bag it should be a bag that looks like he has literally stolen from someone because that's the type of person he is.

The Final Scene: The Client Kills Kyle: Location Shots

Location Shots: The Client Kills Kyle

This is the room we have decided to film the final scene of the film in. The room consists of basic office equipment to show that The Client is a hard working business man that doesn't bring his personal life into work. There is nothing personal shown in the office due to this. The large purple spinning office chair is the chair that The Client will use to interrogate Kyle at the end of the film.

The area behind The Client's chair shows that this is a secluded office with all the essentials that The Client needs for basic office duties to take place in his working life. There is a computer that won't be in use during filming but will be there so that the audience can see that The Client does work and because he as a personal computer has a connection to the outer world. There are boxes of unknown files and papers that will leave the audience second guessing as to what the boxes and files contain. Other than the basic office essentials there is nothing else in the room other than a lamp that could be used to symbolise the light and goodness that Kyle or The Client still has even though, in this room, both of their dark and potentially harmful personality traits are coming alive.

Filming Shots From 2/12/13

Filming the final scene in 'The Employer'

Today was a difficult day for filming because we were in such a small confined space and there was a lot to concentrate on and because all our minds were working at one time, it became tense between us as a group.

There was a lot we realised we hadn't thought about so there were some snap decisions to be made. Some of these decisions were simple things such as using a lamp to create a dark atmosphere and to have The Employer already sat on the chair when Kyle enters the room.

Shooting Schedule for the 2/12/13

Tomorrow we have decided that it would be a good idea to get the final scene of the film  filmed and out of the way because it was the most important scene in the film as it brings the whole of the story-line together. Almost like the conclusion of our film.

We need to film the whole sequence at least six times due to the room being so confined and darkly lit, we wanted to make sure that all the shots are done repeatedly so we definitely have them. There's a good chance we won't even need them. We would like a close up of: The Employer doing his final speech and Kyle's reaction to this and two medium shots of the same thing.

We are filming in a small editing suite in college.

Things we need to film tomorrow:

  • Camera
  • Tripod
  • Envelopes
  • Necklace and the necklace box
  • 'Gun' to shoot Kyle
  • Walking stick for The Employer
  • Both Kyle's and The Employer's costumes
  • Kyle needs his bag that he uses as a tramp

Filming Shots From 30/11/13

These are various shots from filming today. We filmed all the shots from the title sequence so they we finally have some shots to start editing with.

On the above shots Saul (Kyle) is setting up a shot so that I could film him, from behind, performing the opening sequence.
