Similar Short Analysis - DOLLFACE

DOLLFACE

The panning shot across prison bars in deep focus sets the
genre of the film; horror, possibly violent. The background
is purposefully pixilated in shallow focus to allow the
audience to question what is in the background. Although
this is technically a title sequence shot, I feel the way it is
excited could be achieved similarly in our film.

This is my favourite shot from the short film. The chess
pieces being shot in deep focus often has hidden Barthes
Enigma codes encrypted for an audience to make their own
theories on. This technique is commonly used across
'smart' films. For example the T.V series Breaking Bad, has
a shot where the king piece is cornered by pawns, a hidden
metaphor for the ending of the hit  T.V show. I feel that the
chess board theme could be a potential tricky shot, or items
such as crucifix's or perhaps a scrabble game.

This over the shoulder shot allows an audience to observe
character C mental state when she answers the door.
The setting is clever, having the film shot on Halloween
makes sure the film has no technical errors. Additionally
the white face powder and black eyes suggest a paranormal
like activity genre.

This shot is the vital clue that builds and adds strength to
plots story line. The woman seen to be trick or treating at
the house in the previous shot leaves her handbag. This
is what sets up the plot, as character C has to return the bag.

I also like this panning shot of character B running up the
stairs. This is a medium shot and framed towards the right
hand side of the picture. I also prefer the blue lighting
effect, I think we shall include this in our own film as blue
lighting has connotations of isolation and insecurity, all
common factors of a horror film.

This is the second part to the previous shot, I chose to
include this to show how the framing of the shot would
look from the other way round. A intimidate adaptation
of the common match on action shot.

The film ends with a plot twist; something very common
with all types of horror, including our psychological crime
thriller. The lighting of this shot puts a shadow on the right
side of her body. This could be a metaphor for her split
personality. A clever piece if media work we would plan
out as a team and execute within our film.
